Drew, I just wanted to write-in and let you know how impressed our group was with Piragis Outfitting, top to bottom. You did a fantastic job helping setup a successful trip, and landed us a superb guide, Steve Johnson. We had a super trip, and my son Drew, and his 3 18-year old buddies are still talking about the trip.

The outfitting crew did a great job for us setting up the gear and food. Our group was treated very well during the shake-down the day before our departure, and we all felt well-fitted for the trip. Not surprisingly, the gear worked great (canoes, paddles, packs, life jackets, camp chairs, tents, bags, and sleeping pads). I think the non-campers/canoeists in our group are now really spoiled, as they don't know how bad or mediocre camping gear can be, and what paddling a Grumman with an aluminum paddle feels like!

The food worked out real well, no issues with guys talking mutiny. This was no-doubt in part due to your use of tried-and-true foods, and the staff getting the proportions figured out perfectly, However, Steve Johnson didn't mess around the campfire. I think he nailed every meal for us, and by that I mean he was very diligent and professional in the preparation and serving of the food such that all the guys were well fed, even proportions, every meal of every day! The food was really good, and the guys had plenty of food every meal. Nothing was burnt, nothing tasted bad. Steve made it look almost easy.

The "guide" was truly exceptional. I think the guys and I will be telling tall-tales about his canoeing, fishing, camping, cooking, and general guiding prowess for years to come. I've been camping all my life (bikes, canoes, rafts, backpacking, ski-huts, snow-camping, etc), and have taken over a dozen trips in the BWCA and Quetico, and I learned a lot from Steve. He knows the country and takes care of his party. One of the guys said paddling in the bow with him was like being on a "paddling Discovery channel". He caught more fish, in less time, than the rest of us combined. and landed decent-sized Northerns with his bare hands from the canoe, He answered 100's of questions, cooked all our meals, prepared us for the more difficult portages, coached us through one short stretch of rapids, kept us safe and let us all roam, all with a smile. Never a negative word from him the entire trip.

One evening we caught a couple of fish from our campsite after dark, well after dinner and dessert. He had them filleted, fried, and served up for a second "dessert" in minutes. The next morning the same good luck occurred again, and Steve had the fried fish on Tyler's plate within minutes. It was the first fish Tyler had ever caught. I can still see his smile.

Hello Bert …. We are all back in North Carolina now with some amazing memories of Quetico.   I want to pass along the THANKS of our entire group to you for all your help in making this happen.     Also, thanks for the last minute changes we had to make due to my sudden illness there in Ely.    With your quick actions, we were able to salvage the entire trip (minus one down day for my recovery) and all worked out great.   Not sure what bug I picked up but for a while my trip to Quetico seemed to be in jeopardy.   Thanks very, very much for working with us and making all the changes necessary to delay the trip a day.   The route was awesome …… the first few days we saw very few people and while in Quetico, we had the lakes to ourselves.   The fishing there was amazing with quite a few smallmouth bass in the 3-4 pound range.    Also some largemouth bass, northern and a few walleyes.     The smallmouth were, without a doubt, the highlight of the fishing.   We had fish dinners on multiple occasions and everyone on the trip caught fish. Hello Drew & Bert,

I know from the newsletter that you get a lot of email praise, but mine is a bit different. Last Monday, July 20, I came in to the outfitting area to pick up my permit , just as I had last year. However this year, someone else had reserved the permit. I arrived secure in the knowledge that it would take a short time and I'd be done. But unfortunately the other person who reserved the permit had not designated Piragis as the pick up spot. By then the ranger station was closed and of course, we wanted an early start the next day.

Adam in the outfitting was extremely helpful and even stayed a few minutes beyond closing to help me get through the process (with a phone call to Drew who knew I just had to sign into the .gov site with the other person's email and password.) After 6 calls to my friend and a few guesses on the password I was able make the needed change and add another person to the permit and we printed it. Even though it was late, Adam took the time to follow the procedure of going over the rules and regs. He was patient and helpful and I really appreciated his help. I know Piragis doesn't make any profit in the issuance of the permits (besides the shopping we always do while there) and I appreciate the help. Just a little different note for you - a big cheer of praise for Adam - who went well above and beyond expectations!

Thank you so much for your help with our trip.  We felt very prepared and confident in our equipment, thanks to all of you.  The Piragis team was very good to work with, and made the preparation enjoyable.  We never once felt during our trip that you guys had forgotten something. The canoe, packs, and camp equipment were all obviously well chosen and well maintained.  And the food was great.  One of my concerns was that the food might be a bit light, but there was enough to take care of even two big guys like us.  You guys took care of all the details so we could just enjoy the BWCA. Even the coffee was great! Thanks for everything.  And you didn't even need to ask:  I have already passed the word to everyone in Madison, WI -- if you are heading to the Boundary Waters, you can rely on Piragis to take care of you.  I think I may have some takers for next year already!

Brad and Simon took great care of us when we decided to schedule an impromptu day trip to the Hegman Pictographs last Thursday.  Brad's knowledge of canoe designs, the pictographs, and his hospitality and good cheer were exceptional.  We felt very welcomed when we drifted through your back door in search of a last minute adventure.  I was hoping to try out the Bell Northshore and was pleasantly surprised you had one available in your rental fleet.  Our trip was a huge success due in equal parts to Brad and Simon's exceptional customer service, the brilliant weather and Zup's delicious salami and havarti cheese, packed for our shore lunch.  It proved to be a wonderful introduction to the BWCA for my three children, ages 10, 6 & 6 (twins) and a memory I'm sure they will long remember.  Next year I hope to outfit for a simple 3day/2night trip to Crab Lake with just my 10 year old son and I will certainly outfit this trip with you for my canoe and partial gear needs if it happens.   – Chip Williams, Libertyville, IL

First class service is what we experienced using your outfitting services.  We enjoying the two Seliga canoes and Kevlar paddles we rented.  The wood trim on the canoe will never allow me to return to the aluminum trim days.  The quietness of the canoe during fishing was outstanding.  Also the paddles were a real treat.  We have used a number of other outfitters in the Ely area, but will definitely return to you for our future trips out of the Ely area.  The use of brand new canoes is always a treat.  Although putting the first couple of surface scratches on the craft makes me cringe…  We also really appreciated the 10-minutes of time that Bert spent giving us advise about portages and campsites that were on our route.  They came in very helpful.  Between the four people in our group, we were able to recall virtually every tip Bert told us about the route. Thanks for another great outfitting job.  I have all the gear I need for BWCA trips except the kevlar canoe.  Your equipment is always top notch.  I liked the new carbon paddles and the new life vests.  We got excellent tips from your fishing guide Aaron Chick.  Some of the holes he recommended yielded good fishing, and those that did not were probably due to our technique and time of day we were there.  We also enjoyed listening to the wolf pack from our campsite on Clear Lake. The canoe pickup and paddle/jacket fitting was about as quick as anyone could ever ask for. Even the canoe usage tutorial was quick but packed with all the information we needed. Hey you guys and girls.  Myself and two others were there for a 10-day trip in the back-country.  Went in on August 19th at Little Indian Sioux and came out on 28th at Nina Moose exit.  The Piragis people, the equipment, the advice and the Canoe On In motel were the very best.  All were so good to us.  From the Piragis owner who helped me last fall or winter refine our planned route when I called during Piragis' inventory, to the young fellow who pulled our gear from the equipment barn and took the time to answer all our questions before we left (both were outstanding!!), to the tall young fellow who helped me find a last minute stove in the dark, to the young considerate lady in your store manning the front counter who took all that time to write down my credit card info because the power was out and then was so understanding when I realized I had a enough cash to pay for the purchase, the young hard working and I mean very hard working lady who was manning the gear barn by herself when we returned our gear on the afternoon of the 28th, along with the other 3-4 groups that afternoon and the Canoe On In owners who understand what their guests need.  Just the best, all of you.

Thanks again for all the support - we had a blast once again. We saw beavers, deer, hawks, eagles etc. etc. No bear evidence or moose sightings. And it was QUIET some nights. Like eerie - no crickets or anything. At the Thursday Bay site we had a friendly Hoot Owl nearby - that was fun. Once a year just doesn't seem like enough. We both woke up at Moosecamp and were like - should we just go into Ely and restock supplies? We were just getting back in the swing! When we started up the path to the parking lot I was like "Civilization, bah humbug!" But I realized that civilization has provided me many of the amenities for camping - water filter, tent, vacuum sealed chicken :) hahaha.  Have a good rest of your summer and a great fall. Hi Bert,  My wife and I had a great time on our canoe trip. We used a Minnesota II and were very pleased with it.  The kick bar was great.  We have a lot of  wilderness canoe water in our adirondacks, so this wasn`t new to us, but the Boundary Waters were on the bucket list, so we went. No complaints about anything.  Everyone was friendly and a lot of help.  Although I don`t have photos,  I caught a northern pike in lake three that was about 42"!  I saw him rise as I was trolling a large daredevil and steered his way.  He was really too big for my net, and too big for us to eat, so now he and I both have a tale to tell. Thanks so much for your assistance in planning this trip.  As we discussed early on, although we had been in Quetico many times, this was our 1st time coming in from the south side.  Typically we enter from the north and have a great deal of experience doing so. This time it was important for us to have the portages a little shorter and easier to travel than our previous excursions due to having my 11 year old son with us. Steve Johnson didn't mess around the campfire. I think he nailed every meal for us, and by that I mean he was very diligent and professional in the preparation and serving of the food such that all the guys were well fed, even proportions, every meal of every day! The food was really good, and the guys had plenty of food every meal. Nothing was burnt, nothing tasted bad. Steve made it look almost easy.

The "guide" was truly exceptional. I think the guys and I will be telling tall-tales about his canoeing, fishing, camping, cooking, and general guiding prowness for years to come. I've been camping all my life (bikes, canoes, rafts, backpacking, ski-huts, snow-camping, etc), and have taken over a dozen trips in the BWCA and Quetico, and I learned a lot from Steve. He knows the country and takes care of his party. One of the guys said paddling in the bow with him was like being on a "paddling Discovery channel". The highlight of the trip was Steve Johnson as our canoe guide.  He was great!  We had utmost confidence in his leadership and he never steered us wrong. 

Steve Johnson was a great guide, never intrusive or commanding, but always ready to help and participate in many, many ways - including bringing most of his vegetable garden with him! He was a master in turning a dried bag of stuff into a real meal - although, having freshly caught fish certainly added tremendously to our dinners.

Johnson was great; knowledgeable, but not all knowing and superior. Helpful to a fault.

Steve is a superb guide.  He is gracious, knowledgeable, low-key, and a good communicator.  Steve’s knowledge of everything is encyclopedic.  His competence gave us confidence in doing things we had never done before.

Superb -- Steve is like no one I've ever met.  I think he could build a camp and feed us all out of a tree branch, a rock and a rubberband.   Steve could make a gourmet meal out of a rock. 

My nephew Eric...first time to the BWCA, and loved the experience. Age 25--been working out, and lifting weights...Steve nicknamed him the "mule." Steve said everyone should have at least one trip in their lifetime with a "mule." This was mine. Never before seen anyone carry two packs, one front, one back...Oh, to be twenty five again!

We had unbelievable wolf howling on Lac La Croix on Wens. morning...they were right across the bay from our camp. Across the bay. Think of that! I could see the big Alpha Male in my mind as I listned to those howls....I won't ever forget that morning.

And the night before, Steve had us lay on the rocks along the waters edge as he put out the camp fire...we watched satellites race across the sky....satellites crossing above us in the clearest sky I have ever seen.....don't see that where I live, to many city lights!

Cameron caught a fish...Steve cleaned the fish for dinner....few minutes later, a Bald Eagle swooped down in front of us with his talons extended and picked it up, off the rock.....we all stood there with our mouths open! Could not believe what we had just seen, and the camera was sitting on a rock twenty feet away. In hindsight, its more important that we each have it in our memories, rather then on a film card.

Cameron, age 12....was so excited for the entire trip we could hardly hold him back...including when he ran into the mud on a portage. If Cameron thought he could walk on mud, he learned NOT! Steve then taught us how to make a "bridge" with the canoes to get our packs, and each of us, out into open water. Without Steve, we would have surely turned around, looking for another route.

Equipment provide by Piragis was excellent, as usual....everything was new, and worked flawlessly...the staff that assisted us were equally superior....We were in and out in no time at all. Can't thank you enough for a quality trip. I have done a fair amount of traveling, and thus have some experince in grading performance...Piragis Outfitting is the best. Please advise your entire staff that all of their hard work does not go unnoticed....or unappreciated. Piragis put together a top shelf experience. See you next year! Mark D. O'Leary
